According to the EPA, asbestos is a general name for a group of six naturally occurring fibrous minerals in our environment. Common characteristics of asbestos include heat resistance, chemical resistance, strength, and can be easily woven or spun. Because of these characteristics, asbestos has been used for various reasons, especially in the construction industry. Asbestos has been widely used for things such as shingles, tiles (floor and ceiling) and insulation for pipes.
If you think you have asbestos in your home or business that is in good condition, simply leave it alone. When asbestos is disturbed, that is when it’s most dangerous. Microscopic particles get disbursed into the air, and are accidentally inhaled. If you have asbestos and wish to have it removed for any reason, it should be removed by a certified asbestos removal company. They will properly remove and dispose of it under strict guidelines.
Long-term exposure to asbestos is known to cause asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. Asbestosis – Is a progressive disease of the lungs, causing scarring of lung tissues. This can cause shortness of breath and a dry sound when inhaling. Lung Cancer – Mainly affects those who work in a position where they are mining, milling or manufacturing asbestos. Symptoms include shortness of breath, chest pain, hoarseness and anemia. Mesothelioma – Is a form of cancer found in the membrane of the chest, lung, abdomen and heart. Not all, but most cases are connected to asbestos exposures.
